Toilet Training

Toilet Training in Three Days

When I first heard that idea I thought yeah right but it works.

When Sarah was three months old my Public Health nurse (back in the day when you had a choice between Public Health and Plunket) came around and she saw a potty in the lounge and cracked up laughing then told me the greatest secret I've ever been told.

First she told me to throw away the potty.
Next she told me to wait till the child was ready, the best sign for readiness are they say they're going toilet or need to go. Next put them on the toilet every couple of hours and if after a day or two they haven't purposefully gone then stop and wait a month and continue that cycle till they're trained.

Girls normally train between 2 and 3 and boys 2 1/2 to 3 1/2. Initially teach boys to sit on the toilet then when they are 3 or 4 get your husband to show them how to stand up (A friend's 8 year old son showed Michael) - with a vivid (permanent) put a mark near the water in the toilet for your son to aim at.

My kids were Sarah 25 months (two days and she was trained), Jaimie 2 1/2years (1 1/2 days and the second day she said 'no" to wearing a night nappy and never wet her bed once), Chloe 27 months (3 days) and Michael 2 1/2 (1 day - I told him what to do he said OK).

Please make sure you emphasis the fact the child must hold onto the seat while they're sitting there because a few minutes after the first time I left Jaimie she yelled out "Mum, Mum, Mum" because her tiny little bottom was right in the toilet with only her head and feet poking out above the seat.
